Pastels and Charcoal
Pastels and charcoal are drawing techniques known as "dry" methods because they do not require any application of water for use. Fragments of color are applied to the paper to create the drawing, and with stamps or blotting paper, you can add contrasts to the colors to create relief in the drawing. Pastels are generally colored; they also come with a greasy texture, mixed with oil, which provides a very pigmented color base highly appreciated by children. Oil pastels allow beginners to explore drawing while also experiencing the textures and variations that painting offers.
