Little Boats with Cork Stoppers
Discover a fun and easy craft that allows children to make little boats that float using cork stoppers.
An ideal activity for the summer!
How to complete this tutorial step by step?
Materials
Here is the list of materials needed to create a small boat:
- 3 corks
- 2 elastic bands Ø 6 cm
- multi-surface acrylic paint + paintbrush
- a wooden skewer
- sheets of glitter adhesive foam + sheets of non-adhesive foam
- magic paper
- decorative wooden shapes
- adhesive glue dots
- pair of scissors
- pencil
Step 1
Using a wooden skewer, make a small deep hole about 1 cm in the center of a cork.
This hole will support the mast of the boat.
Step 2
Paint 3 bottle caps with multi-surface acrylic paint and let them dry for about 10 minutes.
Step 3
Once the paint is dry, glue the 3 bottle caps together with glue and place 2 elastics around the caps.
Step 4
Cut out 2 sails of identical shapes (about 8 cm in height):
- the first from glittery soft rubber (with a self-adhesive side)
- the second from standard soft rubber (non-adhesive)
This way, we will create a lovely two-colored sail.
Step 5
Remove the paper from the back of the glittery foam to reveal the adhesive side, then stick the two layers together.
Step 6
If necessary, even up the edges using a pair of scissors to achieve a uniform sail.
Step 7
Make 2 holes in the sail using a wooden skewer, one at the center top and the other at the center bottom of the sail.
Then push the wooden skewer through the sail as shown in the photo on the side (point directed towards the widest part of the sail).
Cut the wooden skewer so that it measures about 13 cm (while keeping the tip intact).
Step 8
Choose a design from Magic Paper to create your boat's flag.
Next, cut a rectangular strip that you will fold in half and glue to the top of the mast. Since Magic Paper is self-adhesive, you won't need any glue.
Using a pair of scissors, adjust the flag to your liking (square, rectangle, triangle).
Step 9
Choose a decorated wooden motif to represent your ship.
Once you have chosen the motif, stick it in the center of the sail using a glue dot.
Step 10
All you have left to do is to place the sail and the mast into the drilled cork in step number 2.
Step 11
Thanks to the cork stoppers, your little boat will float on the water!
Tip: for an even more stable boat on the water, feel free to slide the sail down.
