Looking for a colorful, simple, and refreshing activity? This tutorial is for you! Learn how to transform a paper fan into a true work of art using watercolor pencils and easy-to-use stencils. Butterflies, flowers, hearts, or little bees… Have fun creating a unique pattern by playing with colors and water. An ideal workshop for children, to be done at home or in class, to get started with watercolor while developing creativity.
Have you heard of Triple One pencils? For this tutorial, I used LYRA Triple One 3 in 1 pencils, perfect for small hands as well as budding artists: they combine watercolor pencils, colored pencils, and oil pastels, offering easy application, vibrant colors, and can even be used on surfaces like cardboard, slates, glass, or mirrors!
How to complete this tutorial step by step?
Step 1: Position the stencil
Carefully place the stencil of your choice on the fan to securely hold the pattern in place.
Step 2: Draw the Outline
Trace the contours of the design with a water-soluble pencil. You can add a few touches of colour inside, but there's no need to colour too much: you'll work on the details with a brush later.
Step 3
Carefully remove the stencil to avoid damaging your drawing.
Step 4: Apply Water
Using a water brush, dilute the pencil pigments. You will see the colors transform like paint and bring your design to life.
Step 5
Repeat the previous steps using different stencils to decorate the entire fan with a beautiful variety of colorful patterns.
