The Conté white pastel lays down a bold, opaque, and perfectly matte material. It does not gray out when in contact with a colored background: the white remains white, even on kraft, gray, or black paper. This is precisely what differentiates a true pastel crayon from a white colored pencil, which almost always disappears into the support.
Its uses:
- Highlights: reflection in an eye, bridge of the nose, cheekbone, lip, shine on hair
- Modeling skin tones, in addition to sanguine and sepia
- Drapes and fabrics, where light runs over the folds
- Skies, water, snow, clouds in landscapes
- Highlights on charcoal: cover, blend, then bring back the light with white
- Dark backgrounds: lettering, illustration, sketches on black paper
