Knitting: I Learn to Cast On
To get started with knitting and create a project with needles, the first step is to cast on stitches. Here is a simple illustrated tutorial to learn how to cast on, after which you can knit hats, scarves, snoods, sweaters... Knitting can be learned at a very young age; it's just as easy as making friendship bracelets or doing macramé. Knitting involves weaving. The loops of this weaving are called stitches, and each row of knitting consists of a certain number of stitches. Here you can make your first row to start your knitting project!
What materials to use to get started?
At 10 Doigts, we particularly love wooden needles because they are lightweight and therefore easier to handle, even for the youngest. Choose their size (diameter) according to the yarn you are using; your yarn ball will indicate the size of needles to choose. Keep in mind that the larger the needles, the larger the stitches will be.
Tips for beginners: Once the first row is completed, you will be knitting into the stitches to create new ones, so do not tighten your stitches too much. This way, your needle will pass through more easily during the next row!
How to complete this tutorial step by step?
Step 1
I need a single needle to cast on the stitches.
Take a length of thread, make a loop around the needle, and tie the thread. Place the knot under the needle.
Etape 2
Then, with my right index finger above the thread, I wrap the side of the thread that is connected to the ball around my finger.
Step 3
Then I slide my needle between the thread and my finger.
Step 4
With my left hand, I pass the other thread in front of the needle to wrap it around her.
Step 5
Finally, with my right hand, I pass the loop I was holding with my finger in front of the needle to move it underneath the needle.
Step 6
I can adjust the knot by tightening it slightly, but not too tightly so that the stitches can move on the needle.
There you have made a stitch!
It's over!
Repeat this operation to achieve the desired number of stitches.
Once the first row is completed, you can cut the casting on yarn, leaving about 10 cm (this will prevent you from using the wrong yarn when knitting the subsequent rows).
