What is grammage?
It refers to the weight of the paper; the thicker the sheet, the heavier it is. A very thin sheet, like printer paper, weighs on average 80 g, and tracing paper 40 g. From 150 grams, the paper becomes a bit stiffer, reaching real rigidity at 400 grams. The thicker the paper, the stronger it is, which is why we use high grammage paper for wet techniques (gouache, watercolor) to minimize warping.
Simple tips for choosing your paper well:
- Between 60 g and 200 g: drawing, sketching paper
- From 200 g: drawing, ink, and gouache painting
- From 270 g: ideal for water-based paints (watercolor, acrylic)
