Refined Turpentine Essence Pébéo
Refined Turpentine Essence Pébéo: the reference thinner for oil paint
Distilled from pine resin, turpentine essence is the historical natural thinner for oil paint. It has accompanied the medium for centuries and remains the choice of many painters for a simple reason: it mixes perfectly with oils and resins, which not all substitute solvents do.
The term "refined" is not decorative. It designates an essence purified by additional distillation, free from impurities and resinous residues. Specifically, it is clearer, more fluid, less odorous, and above all, it evaporates cleanly, leaving no sticky residue in the paint film. This is the difference between DIY turpentine and an essence intended for artistic painting.
Its three uses
- Diluting paint. The essence lightens the paste and makes the color more fluid and transparent. It is the product for the first layers, known as "lean", which should always be the starting point for oil painting.
- Creating a medium. Mixed with linseed oil (typically two parts essence to one part oil), it forms a homemade painting medium, adjustable according to the layer.
- Cleaning. It dissolves fresh oil paint: brushes, knives, palette.
Safety precautions:
Turpentine essence is a solvent: work in a well-ventilated area, avoid prolonged contact with skin, and keep the bottle out of reach of children. Follow the safety pictograms on the label.
