The homemade lava lamp is a sensory activity perfect for children. It stimulates curiosity, develops creativity, and encourages observation skills… while captivating them! Children love to test all sorts of ink colors and watch the bubbles dance in the jar like in a real lava lamp.
It's magical, reusable, educational… and above all ultra simple to recreate as many times as desired.
The recipe for the homemade lava lamp is simple, you need to mix:
- water
- drawing ink
- baking soda
- vegetable oil
How to complete this tutorial step by step?
Materials:
To make a lava lamp, you will need:
- 1 large plastic container
- 2 small plastic containers (for preparing the liquids
- drawing ink
- 1 pipette
- vinegar
- vegetable oil
- baking soda
- water
- a powerful LED candle
Step 1:
Prepare the liquids:
In the first small jar, simply pour in some vinegar.
In the second one, mix water with a few drops of drawing ink in your chosen color.
Step 2:
Pour 4 tablespoons of baking soda into the bottom of the large plastic pot.
Step 3:
Gently add vegetable oil until it fills about 2/3 of the jar, without stirring the powder at the bottom.
Step 4:
Add some ink, then pour in the vinegar.
Add these two liquids in different quantities and in different orders to observe the various reactions created by these mixtures.
What will happen:
Watch the colored bubbles rise and fall in the oil like in a real lava lamp. When the bubbles touch the baking soda, a new reaction occurs.
To restart the effect, simply add a little vinegar.
Bonus:
Place an LED candle behind the jar, turn off the light, and enjoy the light show!
