Raymond the Hedgehog
In this easy autumn activity for kids, we will show you how to make an adorable little hedgehog using foam half balls, a bit of paint, and some pipe cleaners.
An ideal craft for fine motor skills: children will need to make small holes in the foam so they can easily insert the hedgehog's spikes.
How to complete this tutorial step by step?
Materials
To make a hedgehog, you need:
- A half polystyrene ball Ø 9.5 cm
- A half polystyrene ball Ø 5.5 cm
- A piece of wood
- 8 brown chenille stems
- Paint (brown, flesh) and a brush
- Plastic eyes
- A pom-pom
- A skewer
- Adhesive dots
- A pair of scissors
Step 1
Paint the large polystyrene half-ball brown and the smaller one with flesh-colored paint.
Tip: Stick the half-balls on skewers to paint without getting your fingers dirty.
Step 2
Glue the small half sphere onto the large one using 2 adhesive dots to form the body of the hedgehog.
Step 3
Make holes in the body of the hedgehog using a skewer (depth: about 1 cm). Also make 5 holes at the top of the hedgehog's head.
These holes will allow you to easily insert the caterpillars into the body of the hedgehog.
Step 4
Cut 50 pieces of pipe cleaners approximately 4 cm long.
Plan for 7 pipe cleaners per hedgehog.
Step 5
Insert the small pieces of chenille into the body of the hedgehog.
Step 6
Place the hedgehog's eyes into the polystyrene.
Step 7
Stick a pom-pom with an adhesive dot to create the hedgehog's nose, then draw a smile with a black marker.
Step 8
Stick 4 adhesive pads under the body of the hedgehog, then adhere the entire piece onto a wooden log for a nice finish.
