Pitt Charcoal Dry Charcoal Pencils - Set of 3 Hardness Levels
Pitt Charcoal dry charcoal pencils by Faber-Castell: charcoal without messy hands! Charcoal is a highly expressive drawing medium but can be very messy. These pencils solve that problem: the compressed charcoal is encased in wood, so you can sharpen it to a point, hold it like a pencil and keep your hands clean, while keeping the texture, intensity and smudgeability of traditional charcoal.
Three hardness levels for different uses
- Soft: the deepest black. For solid shadows, large areas and strong accents.
- Medium: the all-rounder. For mid-tones, modelling and most of your work.
- Hard: the most precise. For outlines, sharp lines, details and fine hatching.
Made from PEFC-certified wood from sustainably managed forests, coated with water-based ecological varnish.
The compressed charcoal is mixed with soot and clay: a dense formula that produces a deeper, more opaque black than natural charcoal, while staying perfectly dry. No greasy marks. You can smudge with your finger or a blending stump, layer without blocking, erase with a kneaded eraser, and even paint over without damaging the surface.
Should you fix your drawing?
Yes. Spray a charcoal fixative in thin layers from about 30 cm to protect your artwork from rubbing.
Which paper should you use?
Medium-grain or charcoal paper that grips the pigment. Tinted papers combined with white chalk give excellent results.
How to correct mistakes?
Use a kneaded eraser to lift pigment by dabbing. A precision eraser pen removes details without affecting surrounding areas.
