Wooden Chalkboards

The wooden slate is a straightforward support: a surface, a contour, and a message. This makes it an object as useful in the kitchen as in decoration or workshops, and one of the few creative supports whose result is genuinely useful in daily life. Our raw wooden slates come in various formats and shapes, fully paintable or customizable around the edges according to the intended use.

Decorating a slate: the frame or the surface?

It all depends on what the slate is meant to hold.

If it is used for writing, do not touch the central surface: the decor focuses on the edges, corners, or perimeter. A painted border, a few patterns in the corners, and the object is personalized without losing its function.

If it is purely decorative, the entire surface is available. A message painted once and for all, a pattern, a composition: the slate becomes a small panel to hang.

The in-between consists of painting one side of the surface and leaving the other side free for writing. Useful for models that can be flipped according to the occasion.

Painting and preparing your slate

A light sanding of the edges improves grip and softens the cut edges. On the perimeter, two thin layers of acrylic provide a cleaner result than a thick layer, especially on the edges that absorb more. If your model has a chalkboard surface, protect it with masking tape while painting the frame: paint that spills over is difficult to remove without leaving marks. A final varnish is only useful if the slate is handled regularly or intended for the kitchen.

Everyday uses

Reminder, shopping list, daily menu, door sign, welcome board, oversized place card: the slate finds its place wherever something temporary needs to be displayed. For a permanent message or a name, decorative wooden letters can be glued directly onto the surface, avoiding the need to paint the text by hand. Customizable door signs offer pre-defined formats for hanging. In the kitchen, our decorative wooden items allow for the same treatment to be applied to other elements, creating a cohesive set.

Personalizing and complementing

A few added elements enrich the decor without repainting. Wooden embellishments can be glued to the corners or the top of the frame, and natural wooden beads threaded on a cord create a simple yet decorative hanging system. For a more natural look, a slice of wood log provides a stable base for a small slate. You can write on these slates with dry chalk, white or colored, but also with our liquid chalk markers that will offer bright and erasable colors on this black surface.

In workshops and classrooms

The format is well-suited for group sessions, especially as it encourages writing and reading among younger children. The support is sturdy, the decor is limited to the edges, and the result is immediately useful.
