Wood logs for decorating

The wood log holds a special place in creative hobbies. While most materials arrive smooth and uniform, it retains its bark, grain, and irregularities: each piece is different, and that’s precisely what makes it interesting. It can be painted, drilled, glued, stacked, and assembled, offering a natural finish that medium materials cannot provide. Our logs and slices of wood come in various diameters and thicknesses, suitable for creations ranging from small figures to table compositions.

What to do with wood logs?

Three main categories of projects frequently arise, and they often combine well.

  • Figures and animals. A log serves as the body, a thinner slice as the head, and a few added elements complete the rest. This is the basis for reindeer, owls, snowmen, and other figures commonly found in seasonal decorations. Assembly can be done with strong glue or by drilling and connecting with a rod.
  • Supports and displays. A thick slice laid flat becomes a base for a candle, a trivet, a photo holder, or a place card. This is the quickest project and often the most used in daily life.
  • Hangings and wall compositions. Drilled and then connected with a string, the thin slices create garlands, mobiles, and decorative panels. The contrast between the raw bark and a painted pattern works particularly well.

Working with natural wood: what you need to know

The log does not behave like an MDF support, and a few reflexes can help avoid mishaps.

  • The surface is irregular. The wood grain absorbs paint more than a smooth surface: plan for an extra coat, or accept the slightly faded effect, which has its charm in natural creations.
  • The bark may detach. On logs that retain it, a dot of glue around the edge stabilizes it permanently, especially if the creation is handled.
  • Drilling requires a pre-mark. On a curved surface, the drill bit tends to slip: a prior point helps solve the problem.

Natural wood works. Slight cracks may appear over time and with humidity variations. They are part of the material's appearance and do not affect the strength of the creation.

Logs and Christmas decorations

This is the time when the log shines the most. Natural tones match traditional reds, greens, and golds, and the raw material brings warmth that industrial decorations lack. Reindeer made from logs, Christmas trees made from stacked slices in decreasing diameters, candle holders placed on bases, engraved or painted place cards, and tree hangings: the projects are plentiful, and most can be completed in a single session. Our Christmas wooden decorations to decorate complement these creations well with cut-out shapes ready to paint, to be combined with the logs in the same composition. For a festive table, a log under each raw wood candle holder unifies the whole effortlessly.

Assembling and customizing your logs

Most log creations rely on added elements. The wood sticks and rods serve as legs, reindeer antlers, assembly rods, or structures; the natural wood beads make eyes, joints, or garland elements. For more elaborate compositions, the wood embellishments can be glued directly onto the slice, and the wood letters to decorate allow for a name or word to be inscribed on a base.

A natural material for workshops

The log is popular in workshops for a simple reason: there are no failed results. The material already carries the decor, and even a minimal creation looks good. It is suitable for both younger individuals, on collage and painting projects, and older ones, on assembly tasks. To extend in the same vein, our raw wood offers other natural shapes to combine, while our wood supports to decorate provide more regular surfaces to vary techniques within the same project.
