Christmas Suspensions in Marbling

Create beautiful suspensions to decorate your tree with medium shapes coated in marbling paint. This marbled paint allows you to create patterns similar to those of marble. The technique involves floating the paint on water and then transferring the pattern that forms on the surface to the support of your choice that is placed on the water. Here, we use medium supports, previously painted with white Gesso, to maximize the bright colors of the marbling paint.

The patterns created by the marbling are unique and random; it is practically impossible to reproduce the same pattern twice, which will make your creations exceptional and rare.

This activity should be supervised by an adult, as marbling paint is solvent-based, which allows the paint to float on water. However, this paint can stain clothes or skin. So be sure to protect your work surface well.

How to complete this tutorial step by step?

Step 1

For this activity, gather a basin of water. Be cautious, as it may become stained by the end of the activity, but you can clean any paint marks with White Spirit if needed.

Shake the bottles well to ensure the paints are well mixed. Then pour the colors of your choice onto the water.

Step 2

Here we have used 3 colors: green, blue, and white. Then, with a wooden stick, make movements on the surface of the water to create marbled effects.

For a nice harmony, we recommend a maximum of 3 colors, but you can go beyond that if you like ;-)

Step 3

Tip: For vibrant colors, paint each ball with white Gesso and let it dry.

Then dip the support in water.

Step 4

Once the support is completely submerged, there will be excess paint on the surface. Simply blow on the surface of the water to push this excess paint away.
