Colorful Hedgehogs in Modeling Dough

With this small modeling activity, children can learn colors while playing. Once the little hedgehogs are shaped, they will need to find the matches of the right color to dress them with their colorful spikes!

A fun and educational activity to teach colors from a young age, suitable for children aged 2 and up!

For younger children, sort the matches by color beforehand, then allow the child to stick them into the hedgehog.

The understanding of colors develops from age 2 to at least 5 years, but each child learns at their own pace. With this activity, every child can experiment at their own speed while having fun!

How to complete this tutorial step by step?

To carry out this activity you will need:

- 6 Giotto modeling clay pots for toddlers

- colored matches

- a tray

Step 1

Take a bit of orange modeling clay and make a ball about 5 cm in diameter.

Step 2

Roll one side of the ball to create a droplet shape. Flatten the droplet slightly so that it is stable on the work surface.

There you go, the body of the hedgehog is ready!

Step 3

Using a bit of white dough, make 2 balls of about 4 mm, and gently press them onto the orange dough to make the eyes of the hedgehog.

Step 4

Take a bit of brown dough and make 3 balls of about 2 mm to place on the eyes and on the nose.

Step 5

Repeat steps 1 to 4 using the colors blue, yellow, green, and red.

Step 6

Place the hedgehogs on a tray, and the colored matches nearby so that the child can sort the colors and poke them into the corresponding hedgehog.

Step 7

Tip: Between 2 and 3 years old, you can pre-sort the matches into 5 small colored piles; the child can then find the pile of matches that corresponds to the hedgehog to stick the matches on its back ;-)

From 4 years old, they can start enjoying sorting the colors themselves.
