Easter Egg Suspensions
As Easter approaches, what could be better than a creative and easy craft to do with children? With this eco-friendly tutorial that uses papier mâché, a natural and recyclable material, learn how to create pretty suspended paper mache eggs, perfect for decorating your home or your festive table.
Accessible from the age of 6, this activity takes about 1 hour and allows children to handle simple materials like papier mâché pulp, paint, and small decorative elements. Thanks to this technique, each egg becomes unique, ready to welcome an adorable fluffy chick in its cozy little nest.
What children will learn and work on:
- Development of fine motor skills
- Modeling with papier mâché and handling small objects (string, chick, decorative fibers).
- Gesture coordination to apply paint precisely.
A fun and poetic project to share a moment of creativity with family and to enhance your Easter decoration!
How to complete this tutorial step by step?
Step 1
Make the paper mache paste with water using the following ratio: 3 parts paste to 1 part water. Work the mixture until you achieve a smooth and pliable texture.
Step 2
Inflate a small balloon to give it the rounded shape of an egg.
Application of papier mâché: take a quantity of paste and begin to partially cover the balloon while leaving an opening. Shape the edges of the opening to create a natural and irregular effect, like a broken shell.
Smoothing and adjustments: gently press the paste to ensure it adheres well to the balloon and gives it an even thickness.
Step 3
Drying: Allow to air dry for several hours (ideally 24 hours) until the structure hardens completely.
Step 4
Puncture the balloon: Using the tip of scissors or a needle, carefully puncture the balloon at the point where it is still visible inside the papier-mâché structure.
Remove the balloon: Once completely deflated, gently pull on the tip to extract it from inside the papier-mâché egg.
Check for sturdiness: Ensure that the shell is completely dry and rigid before proceeding to the next step.
Step 5
Using a brush, apply the first layer of acrylic paint inside the egg. Here, a pastel shade is used to add a gentle, spring-like touch. Allow to dry before applying a second layer if necessary for a more opaque finish.
Tip: For an even more natural effect, you can add splashes of white or gold paint to imitate the shell of a real egg!
Step 6
Prepping the Egg : Using a needle or a sharp object, pierce a small hole near the top edge of the papier-mâché egg. This hole will allow the suspension cord to pass through.
Inserting the Cord : Cut a piece of string or cord approximately 15 cm long, then thread it through the hole. You may use a large-eyed needle if necessary to assist with the insertion.
Tying the Knot : Make a secure knot inside the egg to prevent the string from slipping back through the hole.
Step 7
To create a natural and cozy effect, insert some decorative fibers or raffia inside the egg. These elements will mimic a small nest and add volume to your creation.
Place the chick at the entrance or inside the egg. You can glue it with a glue dot to hold it in place, or simply set it down if it stands well on its own.
Thanks to the added string, these hangs delicately and can be attached to the branches of a decorative tree, in a floral arrangement, or even as a garland.
