Step 1

Turn the frame over, and then carefully stretch your silk scarf over the wooden frame so that it is held securely.

Step 2

Draw your pattern directly on the scarf using gutta. This gel creates defined areas as it dries. Wait until the gutta is completely dry before proceeding.

Tip: Speed up the drying of the gutta with a hairdryer ;-)

Step 3

Lightly dampen the scarf. As with watercolor, this step encourages the blending and merging of colors.

Step 4

Apply the paint inside the drawn areas. Progress gradually from the inside to the outside to avoid smudging the edges.

Step 5

Tip: use the paint straight from the jar, then add a little water to dilute it. This will create beautiful gradients and blending effects between the colors.

You can let the paint dry, then come back and add more colors on the edges to create pleasing contrasts.
