Skeleton keychain in macramé
Create a skeleton keychain with a wooden bead and macramé thread. With a few simple knots, children bring to life a funny little skeleton, perfect for developing their creativity, fine motor skills, and concentration. This Halloween craft activity for ages 6 and up allows for the creation of an original character to hang on a bag, pencil case, or decorative branch to complete the Halloween decoration at home.
Why we love this activity?
- A playful introduction to macramé: This project allows learning the flat knot technique in a fun way.
- The combination of cotton thread and wooden bead offers a bohemian Halloween look, far from disposable plastic gadgets.
- Passing the threads under and over the central cords develops bilateral coordination, dexterity, and concentration.
How to complete this tutorial step by step?
Materials
Step 1
Cut 2 pieces of macramé thread about 60 cm long.
Step 2
Fold the first cord in half and pass it through the wooden bead.
Tip: Use a second thinner piece of string to help pass the cord more easily through the bead.
Step 3
Make a knot to create the loop of the keychain.
Step 4
Place the cord in front of you, with the loop facing you, then stick two pieces of masking tape at both ends to hold everything in place.
Step 5
Here’s how to make the knot used in this activity:
- Place the second cord under the 2 central threads.
- Take the right outer thread and pass it over the 2 central threads, forming a loop on the right.
- Take the left outer thread, pass it over the end of the right thread, then under the 2 central threads. Pull the left thread through the loop formed on the right.
- Gently pull on both outer threads to tighten the knot around the central threads.
Step 6
Repeat the same knot alternating the starting position (once on the right, once on the left) for about 10 rows.
Note: It is important to alternate right and left to achieve a straight and flat weave.
Step 7
Make 2 knots to finish the skeleton's arms.
Step 8
Slide the skeleton's body down to the wooden bead.
Step 9
Make 2 knots to finish the legs, then cut the excess cord at the level of the skeleton's hands and feet.
Step 10
Use acrylic markers to draw the skeleton's face on the wooden bead.
Step 11
Place a dot of glue in the center of the skeleton's body.
Step 12
Place a small black spider on the dot of glue and let it dry for a few hours before handling the skeleton keychain.
