Success and smiles are guaranteed for an activity that is visually impressive!
Why we love this activity?
-
Creating a large character brings great pride to children who see their creation taking an important place in the home or classroom.
-
Manipulating pipe cleaners (cutting, bending, planting) is an excellent exercise to strengthen little fingers and refine dexterity.
-
Each clown is unique thanks to the choice of paper patterns, colors of the pipe cleaners, and stickers.
How to complete this tutorial step by step?
Materials
To create a large colorful clown, you will need:
- a polystyrene cube (8 cm)
- a polystyrene disc (15 cm)
- patterned paper
- large round stickers
- eye stickers
- colored chenille stems
- a black marker
- a glue stick
- a pair of scissors
- a wooden skewer
Step 1
Cut out 5 squares of 7.5 x 7.5 cm from patterned paper sheets.
These papers will allow us to cover the polystyrene cube and thus create a colorful high base.
Step 2
Glue the squares of paper onto the styrofoam cube using a glue stick.
Note: It is not necessary to cover the sixth side of the cube (that side will not be visible).
Step 3
Decorate the polystyrene disk with stickers to create the clown's face.
Start by sticking 3 large round stickers (the 2 eyes + the nose) as well as two medium-sized stickers for the cheeks.
Step 4
Cut the round stickers into 2 pieces to create the mouth, tongue, and the top of the eyes.
Step 5
Stick the 2 eye stickers and draw the eyelashes with a black marker.
Step 6
Cut 8 to 10 colored caterpillars (30 cm) into 2 pieces.
Step 7
Insert the ends of the caterpillars into the polystyrene to create the clown's hair.
Tip: children can make holes with the wooden skewer in the polystyrene before inserting the caterpillars for easier placement!
Step 8
Cut the wooden stake in half and then insert a piece below the clown's head.
The stake will be used to connect the body and the head of the character.
Step 9
Insert the wooden stake into the polystyrene cube to assemble the two parts.
