Clear Painting Medium by Pébéo
This ready-to-use medium replaces homemade mixtures. It thins paint, extends brush strokes and does not change any colour.
A painting medium is a blend added to oil paint to alter its behaviour. Traditionally, you mix it yourself: one part oil, two parts solvent, sometimes some resin and drying agent. This medium is already balanced and ready to use: just add it directly to your paint without measuring or preparing.
What it does for your paint:
- It thins the paint. Paint straight from the tube is thick and sticky. The medium softens it so the brush glides, strokes stretch out and lines flow more freely.
- It helps blend colours. Thinner paint stays workable longer and blends smoothly: soft gradients, seamless transitions and gradual modelling.
- It makes glazing possible. This is its main use: diluted generously, it turns paint into a transparent veil that you layer. This technique gives oil paint its unique luminous depth.
- It evens out the finish. The surface dries more evenly without dull or shiny patches.
How to use this medium with oil paint:
Each oil paint layer should be richer in oil than the one beneath to avoid cracking. The medium lets you gradually enrich each layer: use little at the start, then more as you go. Add it in small amounts. Too much makes the surface too oily, slows drying and weakens the paint film.
This medium is clear, so you can use it with all colours on your palette.
FAQ
How is this different from linseed oil? Linseed oil is a pure binder you dilute yourself with solvent. This painting medium is a balanced blend, ready to use for consistent results.
Can you add drying agent? Yes. Add a very small amount of drying agent to the medium to speed drying, especially with blacks and varnishes.
Can you use it with acrylic paint? No. This medium is only for oil paints. Acrylics have their own water-based additives.
